One of the greatest pianists of the 19th century — a touring superstar, composer, and the centre of Romantic music's most famous friendship circle.

The Romantic era (1820–1900): Big emotions, bigger orchestras — music about love, nature, nations and stormy hearts.

She was a child-prodigy pianist who toured Europe from age 11 and performed for over 60 years — one of the first pianists ever to play whole concerts from memory.
She composed a piano concerto at 14 and premiered it with the great Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra at 16.
She married composer Robert Schumann after a court battle against her own father, who tried to forbid the match.
She raised eight children while managing an international concert career — and was the family's main breadwinner.
Johannes Brahms was her devoted friend for over 40 years; she premiered many of his works and he trusted her judgement above anyone's.
Her portrait appeared on the German 100 Deutsche Mark banknote — one of very few musicians ever honoured that way.

1830Gives her first full solo concert at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, aged 11.

1835Premieres her own Piano Concerto in A minor, aged 16, with Mendelssohn conducting.

1837Queen Victoria takes the British throne — her reign will span almost all of Clara's career.

1840Marries Robert Schumann after winning a lawsuit against her father.

1848Revolutions break out across Europe — the Schumanns flee Dresden during the uprising.

1853A shy 20-year-old Johannes Brahms knocks on the Schumanns' door — beginning a lifelong friendship.

1856Robert dies after years of illness; Clara supports their seven surviving children through her concert career.

1861The American Civil War begins; Italy becomes a united kingdom.

1871Germany unites into a single empire.

1876Alexander Graham Bell patents the telephone.

1878Becomes principal piano teacher at Frankfurt's conservatory, shaping a generation of pianists.
